David felt a sudden, dizzying wave of disorientation as he stared at the familiar street. He knew the route by heart, but it felt like a labyrinth. He couldn’t shake the sensation that he’d walked into a wrong turn, and there was no way back to the right path.

He sat at the kitchen table, the silence pressing in. His parents had gone to bed. He should go to sleep, too, but he couldn't. His mind was racing, a chaotic mix of memories and anxieties. He thought about the job he'd lost, the relationship he'd ruined. He could feel the sting of regret in his eyes.

He stood up suddenly, his chair scraping loudly across the tile floor. He felt an intense need to do something, anything, to break free from the suffocating stillness. He went to the sink and began to wash the dishes, scrubbing until his hands were raw, as though he could somehow wash away his own failures.
