The noise of the city, which had once felt exhilarating, now felt like a taunt. He had been so sure of his future. Now, he was back where he started, and the prospect of beginning again felt insurmountable.

He walked slowly through the house, the floors creaking under his weight. He stopped at the kitchen window, staring out at the world. The world seemed bright, and loud. The world was moving on.

He gripped the edge of the counter, his knuckles white. The sensation of being off-balance, of losing his footing, was overwhelming. His breath hitched in his chest. He felt as if he might fall apart. He closed his eyes.
