"Gone." The word echoed in her mind, a hollow sound in the empty concert hall. Clara had anticipated another lesson, another chance to hone her skills under Maestro Volkov’s guidance. The closed door of his studio and the brief, impersonal note shook her. She stood rigid.

She felt a phantom pain in her fingertips, the memory of her practice hours a constant ache. The Steinway grand piano, normally a source of comfort, now seemed an insurmountable obstacle. Every note, every chord, was tainted by the Maestro's absence.

She tried to play, her fingers hitting wrong notes. The music sounded flat, lifeless. She closed the piano, defeated.
