Liam stared at the email again. Subject: “Job Application Update.” His breath hitched. It was the rejection. He re-read the part about "choosing a candidate whose qualifications more closely aligned..." He’d known. He just hadn't wanted to admit it.

He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang a harsh sound in the quiet apartment. He felt an intense need to pace. His steps were erratic and heavy as he crossed the room, again and again, like a caged animal.

He reached for his phone, and thought of calling his friend, the other applicant. He needed to know. The silence felt oppressive.
