The weight in her chest was immense. She listened as Daniel admitted he had been pretending to be a doctor, when he was just a hospital janitor. Her breath hitched. She had believed every word, every elaborate anecdote. The carefully constructed persona he had crafted felt alien now.

The floor beneath her felt like it was shifting. She gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles white. The room swam into view. She needed to be somewhere else, away from the scene, away from the weight of this deception. Tears welled up in her eyes. She felt utterly depleted.
