The living room felt strangely alien. Emily had found the boxes hidden in the linen closet this morning. She’d been staring at the contents for hours, unable to move, a strange buzzing in her ears. Her mother's handwriting, so familiar, yet so distant, adorned every page. She remembered her mother's praise on some of her projects, the subtle criticisms on others. She felt a profound and unusual sense of self-consciousness.

She wandered over to the window, staring out at the rain-swept street. The world outside seemed blurred.

She began to pace the room. She felt like she wanted to scream.
