The fluorescent lights of the accounting department seemed to hum a mocking tune as Amelia packed her things. Her stomach felt as if it had dropped into her boots. Just yesterday, she had been meticulously balancing spreadsheets; today, she was a stranger adrift in a sea of cardboard boxes and unfamiliar faces. She clutched the framed photo of her dog, Buster, a little tighter, her knuckles white.

She had barely made it through the exit interview, the forced pleasantries grating against her raw nerves. The HR manager's words, a perfunctory congratulation on her "new opportunity," echoed in her ears. Opportunity? It felt more like a demotion, a punishment disguised as a promotion.

The elevator doors opened onto the marketing department, a cacophony of ringing phones and rapid-fire chatter assaulting her senses. Amelia took a deep, unsteady breath, the smell of coffee and stale pizza a jarring contrast to the antiseptic order she was accustomed to. She had to learn this new landscape, and fast.
