The phone slipped from Elias's grasp, clattering against the kitchen tile. He stared at the screen, the words "Party Cancelled" vibrating in his vision. His breath hitched, a sudden constriction in his chest. He felt a weird hollow sensation in his stomach, as if he'd just ridden a rollercoaster. He picked up the phone, his fingers clumsy, and reread the text, as if it would change. "Cancelled." The word seemed to mock him. He slowly sank into a kitchen chair, the cool ceramic doing little to ground him. He felt strangely disoriented, like he was floating in a void.
