He’d always said, "Good burgers and good company are all a man needs." Now, The Golden Grill was shutting down. A coldness spread through Frank’s chest, making his breaths shallow. He’d known the owner for twenty years.

He found himself pacing his small apartment. His usual afternoon nap suddenly seemed impossible. The news had drained the fight from him. The familiar aroma of frying onions, the friendly banter… gone.

He pulled his keys from the bowl. His knuckles were white. He knew he should call his daughter, but the thought of forming words felt too strenuous. He wanted to go down there, one last time, to see the place.
