“The Rusty Spoon is gone?” Jessica said, her voice thin, as if the air was lacking. The words from her best friend seemed to pierce the fog in her mind. She'd known this would hit hard, but this was a gut punch.

She ran her hand through her hair, a frantic gesture. The chair legs seemed to dig into her, trapping her. Her usual bright mood had vanished. The thought of all those Saturday mornings, all the conversations, all the memories…faded.

She suddenly felt exhausted, as if she could sleep for days. She wanted to scream, cry, do something, anything. But instead, she just sat there, frozen.
