The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the lawn. The card’s message was brief: “Thinking of you.” The writing, childish. It was from the past. The past she had tried to bury.

David's breaths came in short, shallow bursts. He paced the living room, his hands clasped behind his back. The silence in the house was deafening, broken only by the frantic beat of his heart. He felt as if the walls were closing in, the air growing thick and hard to breathe.

He had to get away. He had to run. He opened the door, ready to leave, but then, he paused, thinking, hesitating.
