"Hello?" Maya called, her voice thin and reedy. The air in the hidden room was stale, thick with the scent of dust and something else, something metallic and faintly unsettling. She gripped the cold stone of the wall beside the open doorway, her knuckles white. Sunlight, which she'd been expecting, had been scarce. Instead, a single bare bulb cast a sickly yellow glow, revealing a small, windowless chamber. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate for escape. She couldn't shake the feeling she was being watched.
