“Ready?” Liam asked, his voice strained. His sister, Chloe, nodded, but her eyes were darting around, taking in every detail of the house. He forced a smile, a gesture that felt unnatural and forced. They were on their own now. The key in his hand felt hot.

He unlocked the door and pushed it open, stepping into a world that was both familiar and utterly alien. The air inside seemed to press against his skin, heavy and oppressive. He felt disoriented, like he’d lost his bearings.

He had expected to feel sad, but this was something else. A knot formed in his stomach. He wasn’t prepared for this sudden plunge into the past, into the echoes of a life he had barely understood. He stumbled slightly, then steadied himself against the wall.
