The chipped teacup, a relic from his great-grandmother, sat precariously on the edge of the kitchen counter. Michael's father had calmly, coldly, announced his intention to sell it, part of a desperate attempt to cover mounting debts. The air in the room felt thick, charged with unspoken resentments. Michael’s stomach lurched, the bitter taste of unshed tears coating his mouth.

He picked up the cup, his fingers brushing against the worn floral pattern. The porcelain was thin, fragile, a stark contrast to the sturdiness of the room. He turned it over and over in his hands, as if he could somehow absorb its history, its significance, and prevent its sale.

He clenched his jaw, squeezing his eyes tightly shut, momentarily squeezing the cup tighter as he thought of what was to come. He felt a deep, gnawing ache in his chest.
