The phone had slipped from her numb fingers. It lay on the floor, the screen reflecting the overhead light, a mocking mirror. Her digital assistant, designed to learn and cater to individual needs, was nothing new. The concept was already patented. Her breath hitched.

She picked up the phone, her hands unsteady. The air in her small apartment seemed thin, as though it were being slowly drained away. She wandered aimlessly through the rooms, unable to find a comfortable position. The disappointment was a physical weight on her shoulders, pushing her down.
