“But… but how?” Alex stammered, the word escaping his lips as a mere puff of air. The patent clerk had just confirmed it, his voice calm and professional. His revolutionary medical scanner, able to detect early-stage cancers with unprecedented accuracy, was already off the market. He could barely breathe.

He stumbled out of the office, the bright sunlight burning his eyes. He found a bench in a nearby park and slumped onto it. The vibrant green of the grass seemed unreal, the chattering of the birds a cruel distraction. He closed his eyes, wanting to block out the world, to make it all go away.
