Rain lashed against the windows of Elara’s apartment, mirroring the turmoil inside her. She gripped the worn cover of "Whispers in the Embers," her favorite novel by the late Alistair Finch. A week ago, she'd been ecstatic, convinced she'd found a kindred spirit in Finch's prose. Now, a pit of ice churned in her stomach.
