The argument had faded, the sharp edges of it replaced by a dull ache in Amelia's chest. She picked at a loose thread on the sofa cushion, her fingers tracing the faded pattern of the fabric. The silence that followed Liam’s impassioned refusal was heavier than any words. She felt a persistent tremor in her hands, a nervous twitch that made it difficult to hold still.

Liam, usually so jovial and easygoing, had been rigid with disapproval. "A dog, Amelia? In this tiny apartment? It's just… not practical." He’d paced the small space, his frustration radiating outward like heat. Amelia closed her eyes, the image of Liam's face etched behind her eyelids.

The apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt constricting, the walls closing in. She stood abruptly, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "I… I'm going to the park," she muttered, the words escaping in a rush. She knew that she couldn't face Liam's disappointment for the time being.
