A tremor ran through David as he dialed the florist. He almost hung up. "Yes, hello," he said, his voice sounding thin even to his own ears. "This is David. I... I ordered some flowers for a party on Saturday." His breath hitched. Saturday. Sarah's party was also on Saturday.

He pictured her face, her easy smile, the way she could light up a room. And Liam, with his boisterous laugh and the effortless ability to command attention. He felt a coldness creeping into his extremities.

"Just... the standard arrangement," David finished, feeling a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. The flowers were supposed to be a surprise, a gesture of affection. Now, the gesture felt like a fool's errand. He slumped against the wall, the phone slipping slightly in his grasp. He was beginning to doubt everything.
