Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Amelia. She clutched the rejection letter, its crisp paper suddenly feeling like a razor blade against her fingertips. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now seemed to mock her, a fragrant reminder of the dreams she'd shared with the barista just yesterday about publication. She pushed the letter away, the harsh script of the publisher’s regretful decision blurring before her eyes. The sudden urge to bolt, to disappear, consumed her.

She fumbled with her phone, dropping it with a clatter. It landed on the floor.

"Everything alright, dear?" the barista asked, his voice laced with concern. Amelia mumbled something unintelligible and bent to pick up her phone, her fingers clumsy and unresponsive. The screen, once so bright with possibility, now just showed a cracked surface.
