The afternoon sun, usually a welcome companion, beat down on her, turning the park bench into a burning seat of judgment. Sarah stared at the rejection letter, the words swimming before her. She had envisioned this, had dreamt of this, had sacrificed everything. Now, the weight of it all seemed to crush her.

She stood up abruptly, her legs feeling unsteady. Her throat felt tight, and she could barely breathe. The vibrant colors of the playground, the laughter of children, all seemed distant and muffled.

She walked, not knowing where she was going, her steps heavy and uncertain.
