Her carefully curated workspace, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a prison. The rejection letter sat on her desk, a stark white rectangle that seemed to mock her. The scent of her favorite candle, normally a calming influence, now turned her stomach. She felt a burning sensation in her chest.

She stood up, pacing the small room, her movements jerky and erratic. The familiar objects, the photographs, the books, all seemed alien and unfamiliar. The realization of her failure left her feeling empty, hollowed out.
