The overhead lights seemed to beat down on her, amplifying the heat. Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the celebratory atmosphere. The room's chatter was a distant hum, a noise she couldn't interpret. She felt as though she was operating in slow motion.

She took a deep breath, trying to regain control. Her carefully chosen outfit suddenly felt constricting, the fabric clinging to her skin. She gripped the microphone, her knuckles white. She looked around, and saw everyone looking at her.

"Mom, Dad," she began, her voice a barely audible whisper. The words felt foreign on her tongue, the emotions she was trying to convey seemed too big to contain. She stumbled, pausing to gather herself.
