The discovery left Marie struggling to breathe. She clutched the letter, addressed to her deceased grandmother, as if it was a life raft. The words, filled with youthful promises and adoration, were sharp and poignant.

She sank into a chair, her vision swimming. The past felt so real, so close, that she could almost touch it. The regret and the lost opportunity to have shared her feelings were almost unbearable.

Her hands went numb. She got up from the chair and opened the window, trying to gasp in some fresh air. The world outside seemed distant, unreal, as if she were experiencing it through a filter.
