"Oh, *crap*," she muttered, the word escaping her lips like a choked sob. The phone was practically vibrating in her hand. She’d sent the image – a candid shot meant for her best friend, showcasing her less-than-flattering attempts at a new hairstyle – to her ex-boyfriend, Daniel. They had shared a messy breakup, and he wasn't exactly known for his gentle nature.

Her hands were slick with perspiration. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks, and the back of her neck prickled. The world swam. She felt a sudden urge to flee the coffee shop, and lock herself away. She felt as though she might be sick.

She took a shaky breath. She desperately wanted to delete the message, but it was too late. He'd probably seen it already. He would probably make fun of her. His words would cut deep. She braced herself, waiting for the inevitable reply, a message that she knew would sting.
