The room seemed to shrink around Sarah. The message, meant for her best friend, detailing the latest relationship drama, had been sent to the center of that drama, her boyfriend. Her face burned. Her vision blurred. She felt a cold tremor pass through her.

She had to fix this, she thought frantically. She had to explain. But what could she even say? The words, now sent, spoke for themselves. She felt a knot of dread tighten in her stomach. She knew she'd hurt him, and she knew the consequences would be real. She felt like she could pass out.

She sat motionless for a moment, staring at the phone, as if it held the key to the universe. Eventually, she made herself stand. She needed to breathe, to think. She needed to face him. Whatever came next.
