The coffee cup rattled in David’s hand. He hadn't touched the coffee, but he felt like he had been electrified. The casual conversation about the summer of '98 that had occurred in the breakroom had left him completely unsettled. He kept staring at Emily, who was blissfully unaware of the turmoil inside of him.

Emily, with her easy laugh and bright eyes, had mentioned "midnight swims" during a casual conversation about camp. It had taken a lot of effort to keep smiling. She reminded him so much of… He quickly looked away, staring out the window.

He needed to get out of here, away from the chatter and the pleasantries. He excused himself, citing an important phone call, and retreated to his office, shutting the door firmly behind him. The walls were suddenly too close.
