The constant clicking of the keyboards in the office felt loud, almost deafening. Mark found himself staring at the screen, unable to process the words, lost in the echoing hallways of his memories. Susan had mentioned "the talent show," and it felt like a cold hand had reached out and gripped his heart.

He couldn't meet her eyes. He felt a burning sensation behind his eyes, but he dared not let it spill over. His heart felt heavy. He swallowed, forcing down the lump in his throat.

He had to get away, before she started asking questions. He made an excuse about needing to run an errand and slipped out, escaping the confinement of the room. He felt a desperate need to be in the open.
