The car keys felt heavy in his hand. He hadn't even finished his morning coffee. The sound, a monstrous crack and then a deafening crunch, had ripped through the serene morning.

He walked toward the damage, drawn by morbid curiosity. The air, usually crisp and clean, now carried the heavy scent of crushed leaves and splintered wood. He felt a strange tingling in his extremities, a prickling sensation that made him want to scratch.

He swallowed hard, trying to dislodge the lump forming in his throat. He saw Mr. Davies, his neighbor, standing in his driveway, his mouth working silently. He felt an urge to run, to escape the sight.
