She stopped dead in her tracks. The place where the weeping willow had stood, where she’d sat and swung for hours, was just a vacant expanse. Her vision blurred, and the world tilted for a moment. She fumbled for her phone, intending to call someone, anyone, but her fingers wouldn’t cooperate. The numbers swam before her eyes.

A coldness spread from her core, radiating outwards. The air felt thin, and she could taste dust. Her lower lip trembled, and she bit down hard, willing the tears to retreat. She looked up and noticed a raven perched on a nearby fencepost, watching her with dark eyes.
