The news came through a lawyer, impersonal and detached. Evelyn, however, felt a wave of nausea, a sudden and powerful physical reaction to the information. A half-sister. She stared at the expensive artwork on her office wall.

She stood abruptly, needing air. She walked to the window, gazing out at the city below. The usual comforting view of skyscrapers and traffic now felt foreign and menacing.

She felt a compulsion to move, to do something, anything to distract herself from the unwelcome information. She grabbed her keys and headed for the door, the click of the lock echoing the unsettling crack in her carefully constructed world.
