David slumped against the counter, the unopened bank statement clutched in his trembling hand. He'd stumbled upon it while looking for stamps. He'd thought, after all these years, he knew everything about Sarah. The meticulous budget, the monthly reconciliations, the shared dreams of retirement.

His vision blurred. He felt a prickling sensation across his scalp, a feeling like all the blood in his body had suddenly retreated. He replayed their conversations in his head, searching for clues, a hint, a single lie. Silence. Only blankness where there should have been the truth.
