The air in the office felt thick, stifling. John sat at his desk, staring at the document he'd pulled from his wife's laptop. His breath hitched in his throat.

He felt a profound disconnect, as if he were watching a movie about someone else’s life. He remembered the arguments, the disagreements over money. He replayed all the accusations, all the times he’d been called careless and irresponsible. The irony was suffocating.

He pushed his chair back, the wheels squealing against the linoleum. He needed to get out. He needed to be somewhere where the air was free.
