The police officer's visit left a chill. The loud party. The noise. It had been fun, for a while. Now the air in the apartment felt thick, suffocating. He watched the officers leave and then he closed the door and leaned against it.

A profound sense of isolation settled over him. His friends, the music, the laughter – it all felt distant, as if from another world. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture automatic, useless.

He moved through the apartment, the remnants of the party mocking him. He switched off the music player, the sudden silence piercing. He felt as if he had let someone down. He wanted to hide.
