The package contained a simple wooden flute. Mr. Green recognized the quality of the wood and the fine craftsmanship. The flute was from a former student, Thomas, who’d had a talent for music. Thomas’s life had taken a bad turn, not long after graduation.

He picked up the flute, his fingers tracing the smooth surface. He brought it to his lips, but he didn’t play. He hadn't played the flute in years.

He felt the muscles in his jaw tighten, and his breath caught in his throat. He sat in his chair, feeling the sudden, overwhelming urge to weep. He put the flute on his desk and stared at it.
