The world felt… fragile. The confirmation felt like a crack had opened up in the foundation of her life. Emily, usually so composed, found herself pacing the length of her tiny apartment, unable to settle. She kept touching her forehead, as if expecting something to fall away.

A knock. She jumped, her heart hammering against her ribs. Through the peephole, she saw a woman, a stranger, holding a file. Her expression was a strange mix of apprehension and… recognition.

“I… I think we have the same doctor,” the woman said, her voice strained. Her eyes darted around, taking in the sparse apartment.
