The rusted metal box, half-buried in the overgrown rose bushes, glinted in the late afternoon sun. Sarah stared at it, a knot tightening in her stomach. Her hands were clammy as she brushed away the dirt. Why was this here? She didn't plant roses, she barely kept the lawn mowed. A tremor ran through her, leaving her suddenly cold. She should leave it. Just walk away. But her feet remained rooted to the spot.

Carefully, she lifted the lid. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed newspaper, was a photograph. A younger version of herself, smiling widely, held a scruffy terrier. A wave of dizziness washed over her. She gripped the edge of the box for support. The dog, she realized, was the same one she had as a child. A dog that had died when she was… ten? The implications sent a chill down her spine.

A small, velvet pouch lay beside the photograph. She fumbled with the drawstring, her fingers clumsy. Inside, was a single, tarnished silver charm bracelet. Each charm was familiar, each a tiny memento of a childhood she couldn't quite grasp. She felt a strange disorientation, a disconnect between the present and a past she couldn’t place.
