The children had found it, a small, metal box unearthed during their impromptu backyard excavation. He took it from them, his hand brushing against the cold, unyielding surface. A wave of disorientation washed over him, a disorientation he couldn’t place. Why would he bury this? He didn’t remember doing this.

He carefully lifted the lid. The contents were surprisingly simple: a few scribbled drawings, a well-worn copy of his favorite childhood book, and a collection of marbles.
