The notice, a stark white rectangle, quivered slightly in Amelia’s hand. She reread the words, the black ink blurring at the edges. *…conversion to condominium…your lease will not be renewed…*. The kitchen clock ticked with an unnerving precision she’d never noticed before. Her tea grew cold, forgotten on the counter. She pulled a chair out with a scraping sound and sat heavily, her fingers drumming a frantic rhythm against the wood. Her apartment, her sanctuary, was being sold.

The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. Amelia walked to the window, staring at the familiar brick facade across the street. A sudden, almost uncontrollable urge to run seized her. She felt like an animal caught in a trap, the walls of her life closing in. Her gaze darted around the small apartment, cataloging each detail: the chipped paint on the windowsill, the worn rug in the hallway, the faded photograph on the mantelpiece. Everything, suddenly, felt fragile.
