He leaned against the kitchen counter, the cool surface offering little relief. He felt a peculiar buzzing in his ears, a high-pitched whine that seemed to amplify the silence. He ran a hand over his face, his fingers tracing the lines of fatigue that had suddenly etched themselves into his features.

He went to the window and threw it open, hoping the fresh air would clear his head. The city, usually a vibrant symphony of life, now seemed to taunt him with its endless expanse.
