The professor’s words echoed in his ears, “Excellent essay, Mr. Chen. A truly compelling narrative.” James felt the words now felt like a taunt. He had seen his essay. The admissions guide. He’d flipped through it at the campus bookstore, and there it was, highlighted, praised. A chill went down his spine. He felt a tremor in his lip.

He abruptly stood up, pushing his chair back with a loud screech. He didn't even apologize, just turned and walked quickly out of the classroom, ignoring the surprised glances. He needed to get away, to clear his head, to be alone.
