The weight in her chest was crushing. Maya couldn't look away from the drawing. It showed a figure, tall, cloaked, and faceless. His childhood friend, the one she had called 'The Shadow'.

Her throat closed up, making speech impossible. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She felt a cold sweat prickling her skin.

She managed to point a trembling finger at the drawing, a silent question.

Her niece, Chloe, beamed. “That’s Shade! He keeps me safe!”

Maya needed to escape. The air in the room felt like it was thickening, becoming impossible to breathe. She moved slowly, her body heavy, as if underwater.
