The phone call came unexpectedly, breaking the monotony of the afternoon. It was the HR department. "Please come by my office at your earliest convenience." That simple request was all it took to make her heart start to hammer against her chest. When she heard the news, she felt her vision blur.

The fluorescent lights in the HR office seemed to strobe, making the room swim. She gripped the arms of the chair, her knuckles turning white. The HR rep’s voice faded to a distant hum as she explained the situation.

Her carefully constructed world, her sense of security, crumbled before her eyes. The floor felt unstable beneath her feet. She could not speak. The room spun around her.
