He was mid-sentence when the email notification chimed. He glanced down, and his carefully constructed presentation collapsed. “You will be mentoring the new project manager.” He blinked, the words blurring on the screen. He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat flush his face.

He gripped the edge of the conference table, his knuckles turning white. The room, usually a source of comfort and routine, now felt hostile, like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding. His meticulously crafted plans for the week, the month, the year, suddenly felt meaningless.

He forced himself to take a deep breath, trying to regain control. The air tasted metallic, a sign of the churning emotions within him. He felt utterly destabilized.
