The email sat there, a stark white rectangle against the dark grey of the screen. Amelia blinked, reread the subject line. “Job Application Status: Marketing Associate.” Her heart stuttered. Liam. The other name. She felt the air leave her lungs. It couldn’t be.

She reached for her phone, fingers trembling. A missed call. Liam. She didn't pick up. Instead, she stared at the words, willing them to rearrange themselves, to somehow be wrong. Maybe there was a mistake. Maybe there were two Liams.

Her vision blurred. She rubbed her eyes, then read the email again, line by line, each word a hammer blow. The polite congratulations, the details about the successful candidate. Liam. Her best friend.
