Gemotions

The envelope felt heavy in her hand. Sarah hesitated, her fingers tracing the crisp edges. She knew what it was before she even opened it. The familiar logo of the publishing house stared back at her. The envelope crackled as she tore it open.

She was surprised by the lack of tears. Instead, a peculiar numbness had overtaken her. Her jaw had clenched, and her throat felt thick, as if she couldn't swallow. She re-read the letter, her gaze bouncing from sentence to sentence.

She glanced across the room at the window, as if she would see the answers of the letter manifest on the other side. She could do nothing but keep looking as if the world was somehow turning without her.
