The rejection email. It was a cold, hard fact. But it was the congratulations email from the company to Daniel that really made the situation clear. It was the same job. The same company. The same start date.

A wave of dizziness washed over him. He felt his hands begin to sweat. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and found he couldn't hold the air in his lungs. He sat back in his chair, and the chair's back groaned at the weight.

He thought of the months of preparation, the late nights, the sacrifices. All for naught. He reached for his phone, then hesitated, wondering what words could possibly express the swirling vortex of emotions inside him.
