The phone call was short, abrupt. "We've offered the position to another candidate." The words echoed in her ears. He hadn't bothered to say who. He didn't have to.

She stared out the window, at the leaves on the trees, the wind blowing. The world outside seemed distant, unreal. Her head spun. She felt trapped in this feeling.

Her pulse hammered in her temples. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the world. She needed to be alone. She went to the bathroom, and splashed water onto her face.
