He had sworn his phone was broken. Sarah had just watched Mark, her boyfriend, sneak into the spare bedroom, phone clutched to his ear, voice low and secretive. She'd been certain she’d heard laughter. She now knew the phone was fine. Her hands trembled as she clutched the dish towel. The familiar scent of lemon cleaner suddenly felt sickly sweet.

A coldness settled in her stomach. She pictured the bedroom door, closed, a barrier to a truth she wasn't sure she wanted to face. She felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to leave the house, to run until she couldn't breathe.

He reappeared, whistling a jaunty tune. "Everything okay, love?"

Sarah’s voice caught. "You were on the phone."

Mark blinked, his smile faltering. "Oh, that? Just a business call."
