He saw the missed calls on her phone, numbers he didn't recognize. He saw her face when she spoke on those calls. A smile he had not been privy to in months. He, Daniel, felt a coldness wash over him. His wife, Carol, had gone to the spare room again. He couldn’t bring himself to interrupt.

He leaned against the kitchen counter, the granite suddenly cold beneath his palm. The world outside the window seemed distant, muted. He felt his hands begin to tremble.

When she came back, she had a sheen about her. A glow. Her eyes avoided his, a subtle shift in the way she moved. He didn’t want to know.
